Teacher Mini-Grant Update: Safe Cooking Activities

Victoria Gillan, KES Special Education Teacher

“During our school-wide clubs, the Life Skills Support classrooms focused on safe cooking activities that promote independence and real-world functional skills. Using adaptive, student-friendly cooking materials such as child-safe knives, non-slip cutting boards, and toaster ovens, students were able to safely and confidently prepare their own mini pizzas and fruit snacks. This hands-on experience not only taught the importance of kitchen safety and hygiene but also empowered students to follow directions, make choices, and take pride in their creations. The joy on their faces as they assembled and tasted their own pizzas and fruit snacks highlighted how much they enjoyed the activity and how valuable these life skills are for building confidence and independence.”
