Mini-Grant In Action: The Rubik’s Cube Club

Several members of the Education Foundation Board of Directors had an opportunity to visit the Kutztown Elementary School to see one of our Mini-Grants in action. We visited the 5 th grade Rubik’s Cube Club. Each 5th grade class has a set of Rubik’s cubes provided by the Education Foundation. The teacher provided some videos and booklets to help the students learn how to solve the cubes. The students were working in two groups. The students in the first group were still learning how to solve the cubes while the students in the second group had already solved the cubes and were working on designing a mosaic using Rubik’s cubes. They start by experimenting with a design on paper and then transfer the design to a template so they can direct their fellow students how to solve and arrange the cubes to create the designed mosaic. Not only do the students LOVE playing with the cubes but they are also building algorithmic, patterning, and spatial skills. Win-win!

The students in the video are E’Zariayah Owens (sitting in both videos) and Odette Sierra Sanchez (standing in second video). The student in the picture is Evan Roberts.
