Teacher Mini-Grant Update: Kutztown Middle School and High School Select Choir Welcome Acclaimed Musician Dan Orlando!

November 24 — Kutztown, PA — Students at Kutztown Middle School and the Kutztown High School Select Choir were treated to an unforgettable musical experience on Monday, November 24, thanks to a special masterclass and assembly led by acclaimed pianist and vocalist Dan Orlando of West Grove, PA. The event was made possible through the generosity of the Kutztown Education Foundation’s Mini Grant Program.

Orlando captivated students from the moment he took the stage, showcasing his rare ability to learn and perform almost any song on the spot. Taking audience requests throughout the assembly, he delivered impromptu performances that left students astonished.

“I love how he had so many songs memorized and how he could learn a song in less than 30 seconds,” said sixth grader Parker Newbery.

Orlando’s appearance comes on the heels of the release of his first studio LP, Heritage Trail, which debuted this past summer and features the hit single “Music in My Head.” He currently serves as the lead singer and pianist for The Lords of 52nd Street, a group that includes original members of Billy Joel’s band.

A graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, Orlando holds a bachelor’s degree in jazz piano. Gifted with perfect pitch and a multi-octave vocal range, he has performed professionally for nearly half his life. His national breakthrough came in 2016 at the “Power of Love” 20th Anniversary Gala in Las Vegas, where he joined American Idol winner Jordin Sparks for a medley honoring Tony Bennett’s 90th birthday. Orlando has also supported renowned artists including Andrea Bocelli, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Robin Thicke, and the Blues Brothers.

Students expressed enthusiasm and appreciation for the chance to learn from such a seasoned performer — and many hope he will return.

“I would like to see him again because his voice was really good and I thought that his playing was cool,” said sixth grader Eden Schlegel.

“I enjoyed listening to all the songs. I’d like to see him again because he helps us sing a little bit more loosely,” added eighth grader Lilian Palkendo.

The Kutztown Area School District Education Foundation and music department hope to continue bringing inspiring opportunities like this one to students in future years.
