On June 2, 2021, the Ed Foundation hosted a celebration recognizing this year’s Distinguished Alumni recipients. Family and friends of the Alumni were treated to a reception at the Setter Ridge Winery, Kutztown, which was also attended by KASD Administration, School Board and Education Foundation Board Members.
Distinguished Alumnus, Chef & Entrepreneur Erik Oberholtzer, Class of 1986, addressed the group, thanking his family, friends, and several former teachers for the life lessons he learned from them. He highlighted attributes such as always doing your best, working as a team, learning from failure, and surrounding yourself with people from whom you can learn. Erik stated that Kutztown is a special place where one can always rely on receiving an honest response. His remarks were delivered with sincerity and joy.
Distinguished Alumnus, David Wilson Saul, Class of 1956, was honored posthumously. He was represented on
this evening by his brother, Dr. Stanley Saul, who spoke passionately
about his brother’s achievements. Major
Saul served in the Army for 20 years in both active and reserve forces in the fields of Artillery and in Research & Development. He served with Special Forces and the 101st Airborne Division. He was a Vietnam Veteran and the recipient of a Bronze Star among other personal decorations. Major Saul was buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors in February 2020.
