Teacher Mini-Grant Update: Author Paul Volponi’s Visit

When the high school librarian works with four language arts teachers through a mini grant to bring in a writer who has authored over twenty books and received many literary awards, great things happen for students. Paul Volponi spent five class periods on April 18th working with students in grades 9-12. In addition, he shared his lunch time with students for conversation and an opportunity to ask deeper questions.

Mr. Volponi used his own life experiences as a reluctant reader in middle and high school to connect with students. His stories of teaching teens on Rikers Island to read and write also captivated the students. He worked with the classes on creative writing, seeking themes in literature, and understanding figurative language. His engaging style not only held their attention but also energized their thinking. He even let some of the budding writers read their own work to the class and gave them tips on how to get published. Essentially, he shared his love of the written word.

The responses from the students attest to the wealth of understanding they took from the opportunity to work with a successful writer.

“I enjoyed how interactive he was, trying to get everyone to participate, even if they seemed shy or unwilling to do it.”

“I learned that you can get inspiration from anywhere around you and that you can find creativity anywhere in the world.”

”Everyone can benefit from seeing someone that has accomplished their dreams. I think it also brings everyone together and helps them to share ideas.”

Thank you to our donors for making it possible for the Education Foundation to bring a renowned author to work with our students!
